CO2 booster pump

 

The “Qilu Petrochemical – Shengli Oilfield Million Tons CCUS Project,”(Capacity 125m3/h @800m, motor power 500kw) undertaken by Yantai Longgang Pump Industry Co., Ltd, has been running steadily for over a month since its launch on July 19, 2023. It signifies the first independent achievement of long-distance dense-phase carbon dioxide transportation in China, effectively promoting the industrialization and scaling growth of CCUS, playing a significant role in achieving China’s and the world’s carbon neutrality goals in the 14th Five-Year Plan.

 

The “Qilu Petrochemical – Shengli Oilfield Million Tons CCUS Project” is hailed as an “industrial forest,”truly turning waste into treasure. With the carbon dioxide pipeline booster pump being one of the most critical equipment in the transportation and pressurization process, it is mainly used to transport carbon dioxide under a pressure of 10.0 MPa, ultimately transporting dense-phase carbon dioxide medium to geological oil wells to increase crude oil mobility, enhance oil recovery rates, and facilitate underground storage through displacement, dissolution, and mineralization. The project can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1 million tons annually, equivalent to planting nearly 9 million trees or taking nearly 600,000 economic cars off the road for one year. It is estimated that it can achieve an oil increase of 2.965 million tons in the next 15 years, becoming China’s largest CCUS comprehensive industry demonstration base and benchmark project.

The assembly of CO2 pipeline booster pump provided by Yantai Longgang Pump Industry Co., Ltd achieves 100% localization instead of importing from abroad. On July 19, 2023, it successfully started operation on the first attempt, the pump’s flow rate, head, vibration, and temperature rise meeting all technical requirements, earning unanimous praise from the China Petrochemical owner and the design party since its operation.

Considering the characteristics of liquid CO2 medium such as easy gasification, low lubricity, and low temperature, Yantai Longgang Pump Industry Co., Ltd. overcame several technical challenges including flow assurance, safety control, and production and operation based on phase state control. Through systematic dynamic analysis and optimization of key structural design, it developed a self-balancing structural form, embedded honeycomb ring structure, and composite drag reduction technology for impeller surfaces, as well as developed a long pump shaft ultra-deep grinding process, solving problems such as poor stability, low efficiency, poor cavitation performance, and short service life. Breakthrough technological innovations have made long-distance carbon dioxide transportation for the “Qilu Petrochemical – Shengli Oilfield Million Tons CCUS Project” more stable and efficient, with all indicators reaching the international leading level.
